Hair Restoration for Men in Long Island, NY

Hair loss and hair thinning are very common problems for men in the United States. By the time they are 35 years old, the majority of men will have a noticeable amount of hair loss, which will only continue to worsen. In some cases, men’s hair loss can start as early as the beginning of puberty.

One of the most common causes of hair loss in men is androgenetic alopecia, which is also known as male pattern baldness or male pattern hair loss. This condition, which affects two-thirds of men, typically starts with a receding hairline or with hair thinning at the crown and progresses over time to affect most or all of the scalp.

Male pattern baldness occurs when a male has hair follicles with a higher level of sensitivity to dihydrotestosterone (DHT), a by-product of testosterone. This sensitivity, which is usually hereditary, causes the hair follicles to shrink and fall out at an earlier stage.

What is Hair Restoration?

Hair restoration is a surgical procedure that involves removing small areas of hair-bearing portions of skin from a healthy donor area of the scalp and implanting them to bald or thinning areas of the head. Hair restoration surgery is often referred to as a hair transplant.

How Hair Transplants Can Help Men with Hair Loss

Because the hair follicles on the sides and back of the head are genetically programmed to keep growing even during the onset of male pattern baldness or hair loss, these follicular units are ideal for men’s hair transplant procedures. Once hair is restored with an ARTAS hair transplant, the hair follicles will continue to grow, therefore allowing for the elimination of bald spots and the areas on your scalp with hair thinning. Here at RHRLI, we use the most advanced hair restoration methods to help our patients obtain fuller hair with a more natural appearance.

Who Is A Good Candidate For Hair Restoration?

Hair Restoration for MenMany men are excellent candidates for hair restoration. Evaluating a potential candidate requires a detailed conversation with the candidate and a thorough examination. In general, good candidates are men who have been losing their hair due to male pattern baldness for several years, with realistic expectations and an understanding that their hair loss may progress despite prescription medication to stop the progression. Find out if you’re a good candidate for hair restoration with RHRLI and the ARTAS robotic hair transplant system by taking our free online hair analysis!

Men who have a long-standing history of hair loss whose patterns have stabilized and have adequate donor hair are also excellent candidates. Other good candidates include any individual who may have lost hair due to trauma or burns, or even other cosmetic surgery like face-lifts.

What Does A Hair Restoration Procedure Entail?

The procedure is usually done in a physician’s office under mild sedation and local anesthesia. The patient’s scalp will usually be prepped with a hair trim and cleansing. This will be followed by injections of anesthetic to numb the scalp. One of two methods for hair graft harvesting will be performed: follicle unit transplantation (FUT or strip surgery) or follicle unit excision (FUE). For more on the details of the actual ARTAS robotic hair restoration procedure, be sure to check out our ARTAS FUE hair transplant video gallery.

How Long Is A Hair Restoration Procedure?

Depending on the size of the donor area and other factors, the hair restoration procedure usually takes about 4 to 8 hours.

How Many Hair Restoration Treatments Are Needed?

You can regain the look of a full head of hair with a hair restoration procedure. Hair transplant surgery is basically rearranging and redistributing an individual’s existing hair, so you are not gaining new hair, but achieving a significant cosmetic improvement. The number of procedures required depends on the individual patient’s needs and what stage of hair loss they are at. Typically, more than one procedure is required to achieve a “full” look.

How Soon Will I See Results From Hair Restoration?

The transplanted hair usually sheds within the first few weeks after the procedure and then starts sprouting as small-caliber hairs at around 3-5 months post-op. The hairs get progressively thicker over time and the fully matured transplanted hair is seen at 12-15 months. We often get the question “How Long Will It Take My New Hair to Grow?”. Get the answer to this question and get more information on post-procedure expectations in our hair transplant growth timeline.

How Long Is The Healing Process?

Hair Restoration Treatments For Men by Robotic Hair Restoration Of Long IslandFull healing usually will take 7-10 days. The tiny scabs are typically healed and gone about 5-7 days after the hair restoration. There is minimal discomfort following the procedure, with only a possible need for an over-the-counter analgesic during the first 24 hours. However, with FUT, the healing process will take longer and is associated with more discomfort usually requiring narcotics afterward. Typically with FUT, sutures on staple will need to be removed a few days after the procedure. We don’t recommend FUT and our hair restoration is considered a robotic FUE hair transplant/restoration procedure which is currently the most modern, advanced, and successful method of hair restoration for both men and women.

How Long Will The Hair Last?

Hair that is harvested for transplant from the back of the scalp is taken from an area known as the “safe zone”. This hair is typically not susceptible to hair loss. Therefore, the hair that is transplanted is permanent and will continue to grow.
