Platelet-Rich Plasma Therapy (PRP) for Hair Loss

What Is Platelet Rich Plasma (PRP)?

Platelet Rich Plasma is a hair-loss treatment created from the patient’s own blood sample. PRP has many medical applications, including stimulating hair growth in cases of androgenetic alopecia, commonly known as male (or female) pattern hair loss.

All it takes is a simple blood sample, which is then processed in our office to concentrate its natural growth proteins and platelets. The separated platelets and plasma are then made into a serum and injected into the scalp. The isolated growth proteins penetrate the hair follicle to stimulate and allow for new hair growth.

How Does Platelet Rich Plasma Therapy Work?

Human blood contains four parts – red blood cells, white blood cells, plasma, and platelets. Also known as thrombocytes, platelets are actually small pieces of cells rather than cells themselves. They gather at wounds and create a framework for coagulation to stop the bleeding and for the new tissue to form as part of healing.

PRP is a minimally invasive process that is used to stimulate collagen growth and skin rejuvenation as well as treat osteoarthritis and acute injuries, such as sports injuries.

Platelet Rich Plasma treatments are an autologous process, meaning that it involves using the patient’s own blood as the foundation for the treatment. The blood sample is spun in a centrifuge at our office to separate the component parts. The platelets and a portion of the plasma are then mixed with ingredients like platelet activators to create a substance rich in platelets and other natural healing proponents. PRP is then most commonly injected into parts of the scalp with thinning hair, but sometimes it is applied in other ways.

PRP can enhance the body’s natural wound healing mechanism. It’s believed to stimulate the dermal papilla or hair follicle cells.

For ideal results, PRP is paired with an FUE hair transplant to enhance the healing and regrowth from the robotic hair transplant procedure. It can also be used by itself to stimulate new growth.
