Can Aging DNA Cause Hair Loss?

There are many reasons why your hair might be thinning or why hair loss can occur. It may be caused by a skin condition, thyroid problems or even emotional and physical stress. It’s long been observed that thinning hair or hair loss becomes more pronounced as we age and new research may provide a clue as to why that may be. The answer has to do with aging DNA, according to researchers. RHRLI wants you to understand this development and know about the possible causes of hair loss. If you’re looking for a permanent solution to hair loss, RHRLI can help. We’re the only hair loss treatment center on Long Island that uses the ARTAS® System, a robotic system that provides minimally invasive hair transplants.

What is DNA?

According to the National Institutes of Health, DNA, or deoxyribonucleic acid, is defined as the hereditary material in humans and almost all other organisms. It is basically the genetic code for your body. DNA can replicate and duplicate while creating new cells so they have the exact same genetic pattern as the old cells.

Researching Aging and Hair Loss

DNA can also play a role in causing hair loss, according to a study of aging follicles led by Japanese researchers. The research, published in the February 5, 2016, edition of the journal Science, tried to find a reason why hair begins to thin with age. The study looked at stem cells, which have the ability to create specialized cells and regenerate. This gives them the ability to create things like skin and hair.

Why Aging DNA Shrinks Hair Follicles

The researchers began by looking at mice before moving on to looking at the hair follicle and stem cell growth patterns of other live animals, according to Science. They discovered that DNA becomes damaged with age and that damage causes the destruction of a protein called Collagen 17A1. This, in turn, causes the stem cells to turn into skin cells called epidermal keratinocytes. The process affects more stem cells over time and hair follicles begin to shrink and disappear.

The next step was to see if these results showed up in humans. The research team analyzed the scalps of a group of women between the ages of 22 and 70. They discovered that hair follicles were smaller for people over 55 and also found that they had lower levels of Collagen 17A1.

The researchers were the first to connect that when hair follicles change over into skin it’s related to the aging process, according to Science. Hair follicle stem cells are different from other stem cells found in blood or the intestinal lining because the hair follicle cells have a cyclical life pattern. There’s an active phase followed by a dormant phase.

RHRLI Will Help You Find a Permanent Solution to Hair Loss

The more we understand about the causes of hair loss, the more opportunities we have for hair loss treatment on Long Island. If you’re looking for a permanent solution to hair loss or thinning hair, RHRLI can help with the ARTAS® robotic hair restoration system.  This minimally invasive system that uses a robotic arm to identify healthy hairs and transfer them to areas where there is less hair growth.  For a free consultation contact RHRLI today.
